Often anger is associated with the way it is expressed and the desire to manage the behaviours. In the counselling process at Lethbridge Family Services, we seek to understand the emotion of anger as a normal part of life. Through personal awareness and growth, anger can be helpful in setting boundaries, achieving better relationships and in being at peace with oneself.

It often feels like Anger arises without warning. Before we know it, we are in the midst of an angry outburst. It doesn't need to be this way! At Menla Psychological Counselling you will learn ways to regain control of your anger, rather than having it control you. The goal of anger management isn't to get rid of anger, it is a valid emotion after all, but rather to stop anger from causing chaos and pain in your life.

Clients can learn to manage their anger by gaining insight into triggers, identifying behavioral patterns, and considering all of the biopsychosocial variables involved. Many people are relieved to hear that they alone are not entirely to blame for outbursts. I help people increase their emotional intelligence, create conditions for successful emotion management, and learn/practice new behaviors.

Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwave optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. In helping you manage your experience of anger we will explore how it manifests in your thoughts, emotions, behaviours and nervous system. Anger can be a very chaotic emotion when it is too intense - it effects your day to day ability to function; your relationship with others; your health and most importantly your relationship with yourself. We will identify your triggers and create a plan that is specific to your situation. You will learn why you become angry, how to listen to your body and understand where the anger "sits" in the nervous system. This will allow you to develop the confidence that you can express the emotion of anger without any of the damaging effects.

Anger doesn’t need “managing” so much as it needs to be “paid attention to”. Emotions serve the purpose of “signalling” the owner of those emotions and are governed by two immutable laws: #1 we will feel (no choice); #2 we will express emotions (here we have choice of expression). Of the vast spectrum of choices people make for expressing their anger (which is a secondary emotion), the healthiest choice is to trace the anger back to its primary source(s) of either Hurt (emotional or physical), Frustration (goals blocked) or Fear (real or perceived) and process it there. The anger signal is then no longer needed and must be “Shut Off”, until needed for another situation.

Many therapists see anger as a secondary emotion. Underneath is hurt and pain. Perhaps it is injustice and abuse that you suffered. Getting to what is fuelling the anger is an important step in anger management. I will work with you to find safe and appropriate ways to express your feelings without doing damage to your relationships and yourself. We all have strong emotions. It is our awareness of what they are and how to put words to them that makes a difference. Don't delay learning this important skill of emotional regulation that will allow you to have a safe and fulfilling life.

As a co-author of the Recognizing Alternatives to Getting Explosive (RAGE) program, I have had years of experience assisting clients to recognize emotional roadblocks and barriers to healthy relationships in their lives. Anger can effect work, home, family and break down parenting and intimate partner relationships. Recognizing alternatives to engaging in damaging behaviours, learning new tools and changing behaviours are key components to becoming successful at changing toxic behaviours that hold people back from experiencing the best in life. I enjoy assisting people in changing thought patterns, destructive behaviours and assisting with learning new anger management strategies.

Anger management counseling can help to identify stressors and learn the steps to stay calm in the face of anger. The goal is to handle tense situations in more constructive and positive ways by reducing the emotional and physical arousal that anger can cause. It will provide the tools to take back your life and resolve the triggers that result in unplanned anger reactions.

Anger is a powerful energy that can be used either productively or destructively. Learning to experience anger in a productive manner involves enhancing awareness and mindfulness of one’s own thoughts and beliefs, combined with learning how to control one’s reactions to feelings of anger. Positive coping techniques, soothing self-talk, healthy core beliefs, understanding emotions, self-regulation, and relaxation skills can be learned to help the individual experience a decrease in feelings of anger overall, as well as to respond in healthy ways when anger does occur.
