Anger is a complex emotion with varying underlying issues. My holistic approach to reducing stress and limiting anger involve Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Brief (SFBT), exercise, sleep, finding new ways of expressing oneself, meditation, and friendship and connection seeking. The goal of therapy would be to help you find constructive and positive ways to manage difficult situations. We will work on both emotional and physical arousal, finding strategies to help reduce the anger resulting from these factors.

Anger can sometimes get the better of us, and learning how to understand, predict and ultimately control our anger is a process that we can work toward together. Like any skill, the basic techniques must be learned and perfected before we can bring the techniques together into a useful skill-set. Anger, and rage, are often the manifestations of other, related, thoughts or feelings. We will dive deep into the well to locate the source of the anger, and then stop the anger before it grows into something problematic.

Anger is typically expressed negatively which results in strain for every individual involved in a situation. It can drive an individual to cause injury and pain (both emotionally and physically) to others. When this occurs it is an indicator that seeking help may be effective in gaining control of their emotions. The most effective way to help those with anger management issues is with cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy raises awareness and concerns of the individual’s cognition and corresponding behaviors and how they impact the environment and people around them. Resultantly, the individual is provided with insight on how to change their perspective and how to b

People who deal with needing to manage their anger are often dealing with the effects of past trauma and a lack of validaiton in their environment. I use Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Dialectical means "the existence of opposites." In DBT, people are taught two seemingly opposite strategies: acceptance (i.e., that their experiences and behaviours are valid), and change (i.e., that they have to make positive changes to manage emotions and move forward). DBT teaches mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and radical acceptance; I offer DBT as either a stand-alone treatment, or as a support to people participating in DBT skills groups.

Anger is an emotion, and like any emotion, it serves a purpose. When proportional and effectively directed, anger can motivate us to act and make changes. But when intense and expressed with fighting, swearing, and as an “explosion,” or inward toward yourself, it can lead to harm for both oneself and others. Together, we will explore the benefits of expressing anger effectively, learn how to not “bottle up” emotions, and delve into how cultural and family influences may have shaped your patterns of anger expression. Additionally, we will identify and practice skills, including mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Anger is a completely normal, often healthy human emotion. But if it gets beyond your control, it can be very destructive in your work and interpersonal relationships and can drastically devastate the quality of your life. Fortunately, anger can be 'managed' which is very different than 'suppressing' it. Unexpressed anger leads to a host of other problems including high blood pressure. However, when we learn how to 'manage' our anger, we can learn to diminish both the emotional feelings and the physiological arousal that anger causes. We can learn to avoid triggers and develop strategies. We can learn how to problem solve, change our thinking and relax our bodies.

Working with emotions is a central feature of my therapy practice. I believe that all emotions serve a purpose and that none are essentially bad. However, that said, what we do with our emotions matters very much and learning to recognize, experience, and accept feelings is an important part of learning how to express them effectively. Understanding that anger is often connected to other foundational emotions such as fear or shame is an important part of the process.

Anger is a common and useful emotional reaction. However, there are times when anger is excessive or extreme and controls a person to the point that it is hurtful to them, their life, and their loved ones. I work with clients to understand their experience of anger, learn to identify potential triggers and underlying issues, and develop coping skills to manage these issues and emotions. Clients will learn relaxation or calming strategies, how to communicate to reduce angry outbursts, problem solving skills, and how to alter negative thinking which may be contributing to the anger. This often results in clients feeling happier, more relaxed, and having improved relationships.

I treat ANGER MANAGEMENT on two levels. The first is to give you tools to use when you are feeling angry. The second is to determine what experiences get you mad and to heal them. Examples are being treated unfairly, spoken to as though you were stupid, being told what to do, etc. These are like open wouns and they can flare up into anger easilty. They must be healed in order for you to be free of extreme anger.

The use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is something that many anger management therapies incorporate. By trying to get a patient to open up about their emotions and feelings and being driven to accomplish a specific task (in this case controlling anger), a person can see positive results in their behaviour. By slowing down our thoughts, we can catch ourselves when anger presents itself and choose an alternate course of action, more in line with our goals.

One of the most common complaints I hear from parents is that their child never listens. “No matter what it is they just don’t hear me. I yell and scream and plead but it’s like I am talking to a brick wall.” Most of the time the way the message is delivered is more important than the message itself. Adults and children alike tend to close themselves off from loud and intrusive tones of voice. I help parents understand that perhaps the best way to get their kids to listen and behave is by first changing their attitudes towards the situation. Engaging in a parenting paradigm shift is a great way to start their journey and I can help with this process.

In today’s cultural environment we have been taught to avoid anger as it is undesirable and needs to be tamed or suppressed. I believe that anger is an emotion that needs to be understood. Anger is a signal that something in our lives calls for attention. I won’t attempt to suppress or eradicate your anger. Instead, we'll lean into understanding its origins, your triggers, and the messages it has for you.

Anger is an intense feeling that is rarely a primary one. That means it is often not anger that you experience but rather, that it is masking something else. It may be fear, feeling out of control, misunderstood by others. Let's talk about why people anger you, getting to the masked, softer feelings. You can then deicide whether or not to begin sharing these softer feelings with close people in your life. I think you will find this brings vulnerability into your life, allowing others to feel close to you and therefore, get the intimacy you crave. Sometimes anger is masked and takes other forms ex. control or rigid expectations of others. We can help you express yourself differently.

We start by identifying your anger triggers & things you have to be angry about. We identify your anger style, including behaviours you engage in when angry. We identify where anger happens in your body & work to help you start to see clues when your anger is starting to manifest. We help you improve your emotional language and vocabulary. We identify new ways you might react to anger. We will explore together your anger process, including analyzing instances when you were angry, the thoughts you had, the related feelings, & the behaviour you engaged in as a result. We will talk about "anger up, anger down," identifying the things you say to yourself that either increases or decrease anger.

Anger is neither good nor bad, but just one of the many emotions individuals are capable of feeling. Problems can arise from what happens after anger has been felt. Our attitude and response to feeling angry is often learnt from others as we grow up which, in turn, influences our thinking about the situation that resulted in us feeling angry. These then combine to determine if we respond in favourable or unfavourable ways. Exploring how an individual views the situation that lead to feeling angry and his/her subsequent thinking can uncover unrealistic attitudes and thought patterns. This can then be replaced with more appropriate attitudes and thought patterns.
