The word “depression” is used regularly in mainstream conversations, but it is not the same as feeling down. It is not something we can just get over, and it’s definitely not a sign of weakness, Depression is treatable. The most effective treatment for depression is a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Research has shown that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is effective in the treatment of depression. In my work with clients, I use CBT interventions. I do take a holistic view of every client, so we will explore your physical, emotional, social-relational, and psychological worlds. Together, we can make sense of your depression and find tools that will help you to feel better.

Depression-What it is and what it isn’t. Depression is a common illness worldwide, with more than 264 million people affected. Peoples’ experiences and feelings can differ greatly from mood fluctuations to some feeling suicidal. Affected people can suffer greatly and function poorly at work, at school, or in their relationships. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds. We know at some point, everyone experiences problems with irritability, sadness, or self-blame. Such responses usually don’t last that long. Clinical depression occurs when these feelings, along with a set of additional symptoms, become intense or remain for several weeks.

We all experience feeling down at times. But a temporary case of the blues has nothing to do with a real depression. True depression is not the blues, sadness or even grief. It is an overwhelming despair so bleak that those who experience it say that it is the worse pain they have ever endured. The good news is that depression is a treatable illness and those who received treatment have an excellent chance of recovery. In my work I use cognitive-behaviour and insight oriented approaches to help create a shift. Since one episode of depression greatly increases the risk of having another episode, there is evidence that seeking therapy may prevent future episodes.
