Mental Health in Toronto
Toronto has a diverse population culturally and age-wise. Of the more than 2.6 million people living in Toronto, more than 410,395 are school-aged children. Throughout Ontario, 23 percent of students have reported that they were offered, sold or given drugs within the last year. In fact, 83 percent of students in grade 12 report drinking alcohol, while 42 percent report using some sort of illicit substance within the past year.2 Those are startling statistics, but Toronto agencies are taking notice to identify teen addicts early to provide intervention services.
Most services provided for recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism are provided free with a valid Ontario health card. The programs are voluntary and private. Teens are given the chance to speak alone with qualified counselors about their addiction problems. For example, the Toronto Withdrawal Management System helps teens find withdrawal services near them, suited to the client's particular needs. Current Initiatives
The Government of Ontario funds programs to help its citizens, including teens, overcome addictions to drugs and alcohol. The Drug and Alcohol Helpline is a confidential service available 24/7 to residents of Toronto and the rest of Ontario for obtaining information about drug and alcohol addiction services. The helpline is free to everyone. Specialists are also available to talk via web chat. The referral specialists provide information about services available in your community, education about drug and alcohol programs and can listen to your problems and offer support. Contact the Drug and Alcohol helpline at 1-800-565-8603.4
