"Life doesn't make any sense without interdependence. We need each other, and the sooner we learn that, the better for us all."~ Erik Erikson

This quote is at the heart of my counselling approach. We live in an individualistic society that values independence, often at the cost of our physical and mental health. The truth is we are all wired for connection. My counselling style focuses on this connection within the therapy room, and also within the context of all of your relationships.

My approach is very client-centred - you know your life and yourself the best. I like to provide a mix of practical tools/strategies with the following methods:
  • Polyvagal Theory - Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, Polyvagal Theory helps us understand our autonomic nervous system - why and how we move through cycles of fight or flight, disconnect, and social engagement. I utilize practical exercises and worksheets developed by clinician Deb Dana, designed to help you apply Polyvagal Theory to your therapy process and your healing. Polyvagal Theory is particularly helpful in understanding trauma responses and offers a practical way to reshape the nervous system towards safety and connection, while fostering resilience.
  • Compassionate Inquiry (CI) - I recently completed a year-long training program in CI, developed by Dr. Gabor Maté, a well-known Canadian physician and author with special interest in addiction, childhood development, trauma, stress, and the mind-body connection. CI is based on compassionately liberating clients from subconscious influences of the past, in particular early childhood experiences.
  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) - Based on the principles of acupuncture, EFT (or tapping) is an evidence-based method effective for stress, anxiety, trauma processing, urges/impulses, anger management, and even pain. EFT involves tapping on specific acupressure points (no needles involved!) while focusing on the negative emotion or issue. How does tapping on these points work? Well, for starters it has been clinically shown to reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone), and to have an inhibitory effect on the amygdala (the emotional alarm centre in the brain).

About Me
  • I am inclusive, sex-positive, and offer a welcoming and safe space for all sexual orientations and gender identities.
  • I believe humour belongs in the therapy room and the process should be lighthearted, as well as serious.
  • I have a gentle nature and have been told I have a very calming energy.
  • I have a cute therapy dog Max who will be joining me again in early 2021 once we are in our new office. He loves to curl up on your lap or receive pets and reciprocate attention.
  • I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology and am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, as well as a Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.
  • I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.
  • I originally started out in pharmacy and bring depth to the counselling room having been a Registered Pharmacist for over 15 years. I was always more drawn to psychiatric treatment, such as for addiction, and found my relationships with those patients to be the most rewarding aspect of my job. The medical model is limited with respect to mental health - while diagnoses and medication have their role, I know there is so much more to psychological well-being and so I pursued my interest in counselling.
  • I am dedicated to life-long learning and continuously strive to bring new and up-to-date methods and information into the counselling process.

I work with adolescents and adults who want to address the following:
  • anxiety and phobias
  • depression
  • addiction - substance or behavioural
  • trauma
  • stress
  • grief
  • life transitions
  • anger management
  • relationship issues
  • physical health

Fees:
  • $120/session
  • Free in-person consultations to decide if I am a good fit for you
