MEET MELANIE CRUDGINGTON, BSW, MSW, RSW
I believe that counselling is a calling. My dedication to counselling others is a culmination of rich personal and professional life experiences.
I received my Master of Social Work from The University of British Columbia (UBC) School of Social Work. I have pursued advanced clinical training and supervision in trauma work with completion of a counselling internship program. I am a Registered Social Worker (Registration #11466) with the BC College of Social Workers, bound by the College Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. I am also a member of the BC Association of Social Workers. I engage in ongoing professional development opportunities and formal consultation to maintain the highest standards of ethical practice.
My scope of work includes clinical and consultative social work services in acute healthcare settings. This entails providing comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessments, therapeutic clinical counselling, direct services to patients as well as their family members on community resources, and leadership to the interdisciplinary health team in the planning process for a patient's transition back to community. Prior to my graduate studies, I worked as an advisor for several years in the field of international education at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and UBC. As a result of these experiences in a wide range of environments, I have had the opportunity to work extensively with vulnerable populations including families, immigrants, refugees, international students, youth, young adults, aging adults, the homeless, and women.
I bring a multicultural background to my profession, and have lived and/or been immersed in several regions of the world for extended periods of time: Kuwait, India, Mexico and Costa Rica. Vancouver has been home for the past 25 years. I have a passion for exploration and connecting with various cultures. I carry this respect for diversity in my work with clients who come from all types of backgrounds with their own unique life experiences.
Counselling is an act of honouring. I am constantly humbled by my clients' motivations and strength when working on their areas of challenge. It is a deep privilege to remain actively present alongside each individual on a healing journey.
I look forward to our work together.
The therapeutic process always begins with a strong working relationship that is built on trust and rapport. Central to my practice is respectful, authentic, and collaborative engagement. A comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment is a starting point in formulating an individualized plan.
I use a number of evidence-based methods to assist clients in reaching their goals. I work from a trauma informed perspective and draw from theoretical orientations such as family systems, attachment, feminist, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), solution focused therapy and narrative therapy. I incorporate motivational interviewing as well as harm reduction strategies. I utilize several trauma-specific techniques, examples of which include somatic (body) work, mindfulness practices, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). These techniques have been found to be extremely effective in reducing the response to trauma and facilitating a client's innate ability to self-regulate or calm the nervous system.
BENEFITS OF COUNSELLING
Choosing to engage in therapy has the potential for tremendous growth. My clinical skills and experience in developing a strong therapeutic relationship, while incorporating an individualized approach, creates a supportive space for increased insight, skill development, expansion of choices, and deeper connection to life.
I am committed to your empowerment in this process.
