Toronto, the capital city of Ontario is considered a global city and the financial centre of the country. It is Canada’s largest city with a population growth exceeding 2,500,000 people, making it the fifth most populated municipality in North America. Some of the popular economic strengths lie in credit counsellor, business services, aerospace, transportation, film production, medical research, tourism and sports industries. The densely populated south-central region of Ontario is known as the Golden Horseshoe with a population exceeding eight million residents. Counselling, psychotherapy is a beneficial process that will strive to produce measurable results of positive change in your life. A professional therapist utilizes several efficient therapy techniques established through years of research that can bring about growth and emotional health. Located on Lake Ontario, Toronto has strong seasonal variables with a temperate climate influenced by the presence of the lake. The summers are hot and humid, and the winters can be well below freezing.1
After World War II, refugees from war-torn Europe and Chinese people immigrated to the metropolitan Toronto area to take advantage of the great job opportunities. During the 1950’s more immigrants were received by Canada than the United States, although the United States had a population ten times that of Canada. By 1960 the European economy strengthened and immigrants from the Caribbean Islands and Asia arrived. With a faltering economy during the 1990’s immigrants came from Hong Kong and later it was noted that nearly 10 percent of the population in this area was of Chinese origin. If you have been searching for resolution to questions of deeper meaning and significance, Christian counselling, therapists will provide real hope through spiritual insight for turning you around and facing a new direction. The value of therapy and counseling is of great worth and may be one of the most important decisions you have made in a long time. Being cosmopolitan and international, nearly fifty percent of the population is non-born-Canadian who enjoy a very high standard of living with comparatively low crime rates to major cities in the US.
Mental Health in Toronto
Toronto has a diverse population culturally and age-wise. Of the more than 2.6 million people living in Toronto, more than 410,395 are school-aged children. Throughout Ontario, 23 percent of students have reported that they were offered, sold or given drugs within the last year. In fact, 83 percent of students in grade 12 report drinking alcohol, while 42 percent report using some sort of illicit substance within the past year.2 Those are startling statistics, but Toronto agencies are taking notice to identify teen addicts early to provide intervention services.
Most services provided for recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism are provided free with a valid Ontario health card. The programs are voluntary and private. Teens are given the chance to speak alone with qualified counselors about their addiction problems. For example, the Toronto Withdrawal Management System helps teens find withdrawal services near them, suited to the client's particular needs. To contact the Toronto Withdrawal Management System, call 866-366-9513.3
Current Initiatives
The Government of Ontario funds programs to help its citizens, including teens, overcome addictions to drugs and alcohol. The Drug and Alcohol Helpline is a confidential service available 24/7 to residents of Toronto and the rest of Ontario for obtaining information about drug and alcohol addiction services. The helpline is free to everyone. Specialists are also available to talk via web chat. The referral specialists provide information about services available in your community, education about drug and alcohol programs and can listen to your problems and offer support. Contact the Drug and Alcohol helpline at 1-800-565-8603.4
